What I meant was a stable 3G network! Now that’s a tough nut. I’ve been using Airtel 3G since the time it arrived and have always had issues like call-drops and inconsistent connectivity on 3G. After waiting for nearly 3 months and with a long lasting hustle with the support team, I thought to give Vodafone 3G a spin.
I trimmed down my Vodafone SIM card (an adhoc one) to a Micro SIM, popped it into my iPhone 4 and got a one day 3G plan activated on it within a few minutes. Only to find that Vodafone doesn’t have 3G plans for iPhone and the usual 3G plans do not work! That was strange. Airtel never had such an issue. (Though they had some other serious ones).
However, I went on to try and install the custom APN profile using the age old method. In case you’re not aware of the same, already, log on to http://www.unlockit.co.nz from your iPhone (over WiFi, if you have to activate the inserted SIM).
Just when I was ready to use 3G on the iPhone 4, with known compromises like Personal Hotspot & MMS not working, I found a new problem!
After looking around for information, I figured out that it’s because of the jailbreak using Redsn0w. I use an iPhone 4 with iOS5, jailbroken and Semi-tethered via BigBoss hack.
A quick workaround for this problem (shall work both on iPhone 4 and iPad 2);
- Log on to unlock.co.nz
- Goto Custom APN
- Select Country & provider
- Select email profile
- Open the email on default email client and install
However, you can’t use Personal Hostspot with custom APN and this is what you see if you try to!
It’s better to switch to a postpaid connection, if you plan to use Vodafone 3G on your iPhone as they’ve been promising prepaid plans for iPhone for the past 7 months and nothing has been done. Here’s a small proof.
Hope it helps.
