Seesmic is a great social networking app that lets you manage your Facebook, Twitter and Google Buzz accounts at one place.

The app is free on the Android market, and for a free app the quality is just great. The user interfance for the application is perfect and it’s fast. Once you open up Seesmic for the first time, you’ll have to add an account to get started. You can add Facebook, Twitter, Google Buzz and a certain “Salesforce chatter” account.

Once you’re done with adding accounts (I only added the first two), you can start using them right away. From the main accounts page, I accessed Twitter first. It instantly loaded up all of my tweets and the interface is perfect with 4 tabs, timeline (news feed),Replies, Messages and Profile. You can also search the app for tweets on the top right of the screen, tweet or click the refresh button.
The Facebook part of the app is not so great though. Its still fast and you can view your News Feed, Friends, Pages and Wall which all works great but sadly there is no option to view your messages. Other than that, the app has limited functionality, you can’t use chat or view groups either so you’re better off using the default Android app for Facebook.

Overall , Seesmic is a mixed bag for me, the ability to use multiple social networks in one beautiful app is great but the lack of features in the Facebook part is a bit of let down. But still, if you use Twitter, Seesmic is great in that case, and while Facebook on Seesmic may lack some features, its still great for casual use and its definitely faster than the default Facebook application.

It’s no secret the online world is becoming more and more social everyday. Twitter just happens to be one of the biggest online social networks used everyday by millions of people and corporations alike. There’s no dearth of Twitter apps for Android, but these top 5 are the crème of the cop.

5- Seesmic

Seesmic is one of the most popular and oldest Twitter client on Android. Part of its popularity is due to its full support for Facebook as well. It also comes with built in Twitlonger integration, conversation view, retweets, lists, multiple twitter accounts support and a host of other features. The app has a pleasant UI and is stable and light on system resources.

4- UberSocial

Previously named Twidroyd, UberSocial is a popular Twitter client for Android offering some unique features, the biggest of which is Live Preview, which allows you to preview the content of any link, share over Twitter without leaving the application. Other features include ‘pull to refresh’ and ‘tweets near you’ the later of which uses location services to find nearby people. The application also supports themes.

3- Tweetcaster

Apart from having an extremely elegant looking UI, which supports minor theming, Tweetcaster, is also one of the more ‘intelligent’ Twitter clients on Android. Offering brilliant features such as ‘Zip it’ which allows you to hide annoying twitter trends from your timeline without having to unfollow anyone and ‘SmartLists’ which helps you organize your twitter timeline by grouping people into lists.

2- Tweetdeck

Tweetdeck has the best looking interface amongst all Twitter clients on Android due to its simplicity and use of colors that don’t pop out to strain eyes. It has multiple column support, which you can set to display any custom stream you want for example tweets of any specific user or your mentions and direct messages. It’s also extremely light on resources and the app as a whole feels very light and nimble. It also has built in Facebook support.

1- Twitter for Android

Twitter for Android is the official twitter client made by Twitter itself. It’s the only app that will sync with your phonebook contacts. The application recently received a major overhaul that brought killer features such as push notifications which means you receive notifications as they happen rather than setting up a refresh interval. The UI is also very neat and clean with a white theme. It also offers a built in search feature which allows you to search for tweets related to whatever term you want.

iPad users that use Twitter extensively have something to smile about. This is because Twitter now has a HTML5 version of its website Twitter.com that will act as a makeover for iPad users. Obviously, this makeover comes as Twitter’s popularity is spreading and HTML5 is the technology that everyone is moving towards. This, needless to say, will be an upgraded version of the Twitter app that was made available to iPhone and Android smartphones.

This information has spread across the world since Twitter tweeted on the following on their page

We’ve launched our HTML5 version of twitter.com for iPad. It will be rolling out to device owners over the next week or so

According to reports, this app is entirely based on HTML5 and unlike the tradition one panel view the latest version will be a two panel view. Additionally, it is said to be more touch-friendly, and sensitive to touch gestures. Also, it is said to reflect the new look and feel that Twitter’s website design is moving towards.

This has just been announced and not all have been able to test the app as yet. However, going by Twitters declaration in their tweet over the next weeks more and more users will have access to it, and experts will be able to gauge the feedback from users.

Techmeme provides overview of the most popular stories that are doing the rounds. For a while now Techmeme used blog posts, news articles, and press releases to update their news. The latest addition to its sources has been Twitter.

Gabe Rivera, the founder of Techmeme , wrote

for as long as newsmakers have used Twitter, tweets have broken news stories. And yet for Techmeme, linking directly to tweets was never imperative – after all most newsworthy tweets are blogged within minutes, moreover with helpful context

To emphasis the importance of Tweets in today’s internet days, he added

But still it seemed as if something was missing in passing over tweets: we’d miss the first few minutes of certain developing stories as well as opportunities for including good commentary

After acknowledging the importance of including Twitter he announced that

we’ve begun incorporating tweets on Techmeme. Our first tweet as a main headline is here, and appears below

Following this the Techmeme page displayed its first Tweet headline.

Though this means that Twitter will also be identified as an important source for generating and identifying news, it is important to note that this will not be the only source of information. Techmeme will continue to use all other sources like blogs, news articles, and formal press releases.

Algeria has been under the scanner for a while because of the riots that have spread through the country. The riots broke out last week and is said to be instigated to protest the rise in prices. The protests have been suspected to have gained popularity, using the far reaching access of social media such as Facebook and Twitter.

The government of Algeria has tried to block these social networks for a while to reduce. According to a report in the Next Web

Social Media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube have been decisive tools activists and rioters use to expose governmental atrocities throughout the riots. These tools have also helped show the aggression expressed by Algerian youth towards public and private property

Therefore, the Algerian government went ahead and completely blocked social media in the aim to reduce the coordinating and organizing protests. Additionally, this ensured that the information of the protests were not reported to the rest of the world and were channelized through formal media.

As much as social media may be blocked in Algeria, social media has not blocked Algeria out of its burning issues. Many people outside and within Algeria have voiced their opinions on the crisis and hope that normalcy has been reinstated quickly in the country.

The Sunday Herald Sun has reported that it has received a list of 27 post offices nationally that will be closed starting December 31, 2010.

The organization, which employees 34,000 people, has seen a dip in profitability for from $500 million a few years ago to $100 million last year.

In its annual report the company said

If we do not take action now to reform our business model, Australia Post will lose money in the next few years. This is not an option.

Australia Post national media manager, Lanie Harris, said

The 27 outlets identified in July represent 0.6 per cent of our network. Those on the list will be monitored before any final decision is made. Any decision to close a post office is taken as a final resort

The union was informed of the closure during the week and told that the staff will be offered new positions. Employees were also told that the selected outlets to be closed were identified based on their long-term sustainability and future. $150 million has been retained for a redundancy program.

Indonesian official Andi Arief’s account was hacked by a hacker and used to send fake tsunami warnings. Andi Arief is the Indonesian president’s, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s, disaster management adviser.

Andi Rief had over 8,000 followers on a Twitter account used to post disaster-related updates. This is because Indonesia has over 150 active volcanoes and is frequently struck by earthquakes, floods or tsunamis. With such popularity and followings because of the nature of the account, it also got a lot of attention for cyber crime.

Akuat Supriyanto, a member of Andi’s staff, confirmed the hack on Twitter. He told the press

Today, at dawn, the Twitter account of Andi Arief, the presidential adviser for social and disaster management was hacked. The hacker wrote many incorrect messages. Please inform other friends

This hacking forced Andi to open another account and took part responsibility for the hacking. He added

It is probably because of my own recklessness therefore starting now I am using @AndiAriefNews, please understand’. He also tweeted ‘Because of the trouble I had with my old Twitter account, I am using this account to update information. Thank you

It isn’t clear how Arief’s account was compromised. However, this has surely made people more aware social medias risk and vulnerability.
