iOS 5 is now out and here are eight handy tips for using your iPhone 4 and iOS 5:

Reminders
This is possibly one of the best new features on iOS for iPhone 4. Using the new Reminders app you can set reminders by time OR location. So if you need to do something when you get home from work you can set a reminder for that. You will then be reminded once you arrive at your home address. You need to have Location Services enabled in order for location reminders to work.

Sync iTunes via Wi-Fi
You can now sync your iTunes library wirelessly over Wi-Fi. To do this go to Settings, General, iTunes Wi-Fi Sync. By doing this once you will automatically get your iPhone to sync with iTunes wirelessly every time your iPhone is plugged into a plug socket.

Access Camera from Lock Screen
You can now access your camera quickly to capture those unmissable moments. When your iPhone is locked, double tap the home button and you will get the option to go to your camera. It loads quite fast and allows you to quickly use your camera!

Quick Camera Capture
With the camera being one of the main features of the iPhone 4s, many camera related features have been brought to the iPhone 4. When taking photos you can now use the ‘+’ button, used for increasing volume, to snap pictures. You can now also use the ‘+’ button on your iPhone headphones!

LED flash for Alerts
By going to Settings, General, Accessibility you can turn on the the LED flash for Alerts option. This means the LED flash will light up when an alert occurs.

Assign Vibrations to Contacts
Also in the Settings, General, Accessibility area you can assign custom vibrations to contacts. So if your best mate rings you can get your iPhone to vibrate like crazy so you don’t miss them!

Keyboard Shortcuts
You are now able to create keyboard shortcuts for when your are texting or emailing. To do this go to Settings, General, Keyboard. Here you can assign shortcuts, for example i have set ‘@me’ to fill out my email address in full.

Notifications
This is one of the most interesting, useful features in the new iOS, in my opinion. The new Notification Centre can be viewed by swiping down from the top. Here you can see emails, texts, Facebook updates and any other apps that like to notify you!

In recent research by UBS, the large investment bank, they found out that 9 out of 10 iPhone users were planning to buy another iPhone as their next phone.

UBS were doing research into whether users were likely to change mobile phone brands and platforms. It seems Apple has satisfied their customers excellently and they are likely to buy another iPhone in the future. With the iPhone 5 due to be announced on the 5th October, iPhone users better start saving their cash!

Just 39% of HTC mobile phone owners said they were going to buy another HTC phone as their next mobile phone. This is an incredible drop and considering HTC were second in the retention figures it doesn’t bode well for BlackBerry.

In terms of retention with operating system platforms Android fared quite well with 60% of users saying they will stick with an Android running smartphone. However 30% of  Android users surveyed said they want to get an Apple iPhone running iOS for their next phone.

UBS assessed the mobile phone use trends by asking a various sample about their habits. In one section, however, 515 executives owning smartphone were asked. The executives were from 30 American and European mobile networks. So overall the sample that this survey is based on may not be the most realistic and could be biased. The sample mentioned were also business minded people so they are not the general public and it won’t necessarily represent a clear picture of everyone’s views.

Research in Motion, owners of BlackBerry, won’t be happy to know that just 33% of BlackBerry owners were definitely going to buy a BlackBerry as their next phone. This comes as quite a shock to me as most BlackBerry users i know say that they like their BlackBerry and mostly BBM, the instant messaging service.

Case-Mate, the iPhone accessories manufacturer, has published an iPhone 5 web page. The web page did feature pictures of iPhone 5 cases but they were taken down shortly after being found, the page was then replaced with an email update sign up form and speculation about the iPhone 5 / iPhone 4S.

The picture is supposed to have an iPhone 5 within. From these images we can see that the iPhone 5 has rounded edges and a brushed aluminium back.

There have been reports that the back of the new iPhone will be metal so these images concur nicely with them rumours.

One thing the Case-Mate website confirms for sure is that the new iPhone will be release in the ‘coming weeks’. This coincides with the recent leak by France Telecom CEO Stephane Richard, that the iPhone will be released on the 15th October.

This is not the first iPhone 5 case leak, earlier this year a Chinese manufacturer leaked a case for the iPhone 5g. The Guandong based company were accepting orders on Chinese trading site Alibaba.com and claimed it was the case for the iPhone 5. It produced images which showed an edge to edge screen which there have been many rumours about.

However the Case-Mate leak is considerably more credible than the Chinese one. Case-Mate work closely with Apple and have produced cases for Apple products for many years.

More Thing, another iPhone case maker, have also created a preview page, like Case-Mate. This suggests that the iPhone 5 launch isn’t too far away now.

On the Case-Mate preview page it says:

“From our inside resources, it appears that Apple will be indeed launching both an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 4S in early October.”

This is interesting, would Case-Mate risk their reputation by posting fake and untrue rumours on their website? Surely if they ‘have iPhone cases ready’ they will have seen the specifications for the new iPhone and will know what is going on.

Download Wootish

There have been reports of a new iPhone application called Aurasma. It can identify images stored in the database and convert them into related videos. This app is the brainchild of an enterprise software firm called Autonomy. Aurasma uses the firms scaled down version of IDOL patter recognizer. The IDOL patter recognizer converts images in the database to videos.

It is a technology that has been designed to power apps for iPhone. It first recognizes images and objects, and then enhances the image or object, replacing it with a video and allows virtual objects to interact with other real objects. It promises to add a new layer of video and interactivity on regular print.

The prototype of the software is reported to have been very easy to use and robust. It certainly promises to add a lot of options and outlets for the advertising space, while ensuring that the users are left entertained and interested.

Reported to be a direct competitor to Google’s Goggles project, it hopes to be a simple app that adds some motion. Version 1 of the app, scheduled to release sometime in May, is going to come in the form of an AR Advertisment/game for a movie that will be releasing soon.

Windows Phone 7 is the latest Windows version in the block. Now, Windows 7 can also be used on iPhone. A developer has created a theme that makes an iPhone look more like a Windows Phone 7. This version is available for a free preview and will soon be chargeable. Though it does not work exactly like the Windows Phone 7 and has received some slack from ardent Apple fans, it has surely received a lot of attention.

This theme can be installed using a few simple steps. However, some of prerequisites are:

• The iPhone must be jailbroken with Cydia installed
• It requires an internet connection (preferably Wi-Fi)

Guide to install the theme:

• Launch Cydia and install Backboard (free)
• Backboard created within a backup of your current theme. You can do this by pushing the “+” at the bottom left of the app.
• Now with your iPhone, click on the link below, or write it by hand navigation bar in safari:
• ” backboard: / / http://wyndrepo.googlecode.com/files/OS7Beta.zip “
• Press “Yes” and wait for the download to finish. This may take several minutes depending on your internet connection.
• Select the theme from the board OS7

Earlier this month some hackers managed to port Android 2.3.1 Gingerbread on a jailbroken iPhone 3G, while others stayed still until it was released to the general public. Well, here is the day when Android 2.3.1 Gingerbread is finally released for iPhone 3G, 2G and iPod touch 1G. Android port will soon be available for iPhone 4, iPad and iPhone 3GS. However you need to note that because this is a preview release, it will not be distributed via Bootlace.

This is a preview release of Android Gingerbread (2.3.1) for Apple devices, I am busy with other projects for a few weeks and the other 3 active developers are working on porting openiboot to the iPhone 4, iPad and 3GS, so I thought I’d put a test build out for everyone to have a mess around with, please read this post fully before trying it.

This release is for iPhone 2G,  iPhone 3G & iPod Touch 1G and is ONLY available as a binary package.

Further it is interesting to note that you don’t need a new version of OpeniBoot for booting this and if your openiboot install is capable of booting later MoJo releases, then it will be able to boot this. And don’t forget you will need a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch to install it.

KT Corp., the South Korean mobile operator, announced that the Apple iPhone usage has surpassed 2 million in the country. This too after a year’s sale of the smartphone in the country.

According to 9to5mac there is a difference of pricing between the AT&T and Verizon pricing. The different is about $50.

AT&T’s no contract phones:

• 32 GB iPhone 4 for $699

Verizon’s no contract phones:

• 16 GB iPhone 4 for $649
• 32 GB iPhone 4 for $749
