iOS 5 is now out and here are eight handy tips for using your iPhone 4 and iOS 5:

Reminders
This is possibly one of the best new features on iOS for iPhone 4. Using the new Reminders app you can set reminders by time OR location. So if you need to do something when you get home from work you can set a reminder for that. You will then be reminded once you arrive at your home address. You need to have Location Services enabled in order for location reminders to work.

Sync iTunes via Wi-Fi
You can now sync your iTunes library wirelessly over Wi-Fi. To do this go to Settings, General, iTunes Wi-Fi Sync. By doing this once you will automatically get your iPhone to sync with iTunes wirelessly every time your iPhone is plugged into a plug socket.

Access Camera from Lock Screen
You can now access your camera quickly to capture those unmissable moments. When your iPhone is locked, double tap the home button and you will get the option to go to your camera. It loads quite fast and allows you to quickly use your camera!

Quick Camera Capture
With the camera being one of the main features of the iPhone 4s, many camera related features have been brought to the iPhone 4. When taking photos you can now use the ‘+’ button, used for increasing volume, to snap pictures. You can now also use the ‘+’ button on your iPhone headphones!

LED flash for Alerts
By going to Settings, General, Accessibility you can turn on the the LED flash for Alerts option. This means the LED flash will light up when an alert occurs.

Assign Vibrations to Contacts
Also in the Settings, General, Accessibility area you can assign custom vibrations to contacts. So if your best mate rings you can get your iPhone to vibrate like crazy so you don’t miss them!

Keyboard Shortcuts
You are now able to create keyboard shortcuts for when your are texting or emailing. To do this go to Settings, General, Keyboard. Here you can assign shortcuts, for example i have set ‘@me’ to fill out my email address in full.

Notifications
This is one of the most interesting, useful features in the new iOS, in my opinion. The new Notification Centre can be viewed by swiping down from the top. Here you can see emails, texts, Facebook updates and any other apps that like to notify you!

These are just some handy tips for the new iOS 5 for iPhone 4. If you have any other tips, comment using the forms below!

With Apple’s latest operating system launching next week we thought we’d compare the features of the new iOS5 against the Android. We have compared Android 2.3 Gingerbread ‘out of the box’ so to speak. There is much ability to edit Android so we have compared the default version for the Android.

In terms of Unified Notifications the new Notification Centre from Apple bares a few resemblances with the Android notification system. On both operating systems you can pull down a panel of notifications from the top of the display, access notifications when the phone is locked and when your are using the phone. In this area there is no major difference between the two.

For Phone to Phone messaging the iPhone wins. iOS5 debuts Apple’s iMessage system which allows iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users to send messages directly to each other over the internet. It is similar to the BlackBerry BBM system, something which Apple has obviously kept a close eye on. Android doesn’t have this feature as default, you can download apps such as WhatsApp which are also available on other platforms.

iOS5 also beats Android when it comes to their Reminder system. Both platforms can set basic reminders but iOS5 goes one step further and allows you to set location based reminders. This is quite extraordinary, you can set a reminder for when you arrive at a location, leave a location or for both. You can now sync your reminders with other Apple devices also using iCloud.

A camera is now a huge aspect of a phone, therefore quick access to the camera is a useful feature. Using iOS5 you can jump to your camera without unlocking the phone, perfect for capturing those unexpected moments. In order to access the camera on Android you need to unlock the phone first.

Editing photos on your phone is becoming more and more popular. Both platforms give you the ability to crop and rotate images on your phone. However in iOS5 you can now auto-enhance photos and get rid of red eye on your phone, this takes it one step further than Android.

Many browsers are available for Android but the default one doesn’t have tabbed browsing. iOS’s in built Safari has had this ability for some time. It is amazing that Google have done a small update to add tabbed browsing!

Gaming is another increasingly popular feature on mobile phones. Game Centre on the iOS now allows you to download and review apps without logging in and out. A similar online gaming community is not available on Android.

Synchronization over Wi-Fi is for some, an important feature. Android allows you to syn your contacts using Gmail over Wi-Fi, the iOS5 doesn’t currently offer this. However a new feature in iOS5 is the ability to sync your iTunes library over Wi-Fi, including music and videos.

Currently iOS5 does look like it will be the better operating system. However, it will be interesting to see what they are like hands on on their respected devices.

In recent research by UBS, the large investment bank, they found out that 9 out of 10 iPhone users were planning to buy another iPhone as their next phone.

UBS were doing research into whether users were likely to change mobile phone brands and platforms. It seems Apple has satisfied their customers excellently and they are likely to buy another iPhone in the future. With the iPhone 5 due to be announced on the 5th October, iPhone users better start saving their cash!

Just 39% of HTC mobile phone owners said they were going to buy another HTC phone as their next mobile phone. This is an incredible drop and considering HTC were second in the retention figures it doesn’t bode well for BlackBerry.

In terms of retention with operating system platforms Android fared quite well with 60% of users saying they will stick with an Android running smartphone. However 30% of Android users surveyed said they want to get an Apple iPhone running iOS for their next phone.

UBS assessed the mobile phone use trends by asking a various sample about their habits. In one section, however, 515 executives owning smartphone were asked. The executives were from 30 American and European mobile networks. So overall the sample that this survey is based on may not be the most realistic and could be biased. The sample mentioned were also business minded people so they are not the general public and it won’t necessarily represent a clear picture of everyone’s views.

Let us know in the comments section whether you are wanting to change smart phone manufacturer or operating system!

Research in Motion, owners of BlackBerry, won’t be happy to know that just 33% of BlackBerry owners were definitely going to buy a BlackBerry as their next phone. This comes as quite a shock to me as most BlackBerry users i know say that they like their BlackBerry and mostly BBM, the instant messaging service.

Case-Mate, the iPhone accessories manufacturer, has published an iPhone 5 web page. The web page did feature pictures of iPhone 5 cases but they were taken down shortly after being found, the page was then replaced with an email update sign up form and speculation about the iPhone 5 / iPhone 4S.

Below is an image of the case images that were pulled from the site:

The picture is supposed to have an iPhone 5 within. From these images we can see that the iPhone 5 has rounded edges and a brushed aluminium back.

There have been reports that the back of the new iPhone will be metal so these images concur nicely with them rumours.

One thing the Case-Mate website confirms for sure is that the new iPhone will be release in the ‘coming weeks’. This coincides with the recent leak by France Telecom CEO Stephane Richard, that the iPhone will be released on the 15th October.

This is not the first iPhone 5 case leak, earlier this year a Chinese manufacturer leaked a case for the iPhone 5g. The Guandong based company were accepting orders on Chinese trading site Alibaba.com and claimed it was the case for the iPhone 5. It produced images which showed an edge to edge screen which there have been many rumours about.

However the Case-Mate leak is considerably more credible than the Chinese one. Case-Mate work closely with Apple and have produced cases for Apple products for many years.

More Thing, another iPhone case maker, have also created a preview page, like Case-Mate. This suggests that the iPhone 5 launch isn’t too far away now.

On the Case-Mate preview page it says:

“From our inside resources, it appears that Apple will be indeed launching both an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 4S in early October.”

This is interesting, would Case-Mate risk their reputation by posting fake and untrue rumours on their website? Surely if they ‘have iPhone cases ready’ they will have seen the specifications for the new iPhone and will know what is going on.

With MacWorld Asia 2011 taking place in Beijing this week, 22-25 September, maybe Apple will announce it there? The wait is almost up for those dying to see the new iPhone. Maybe this time next week we will be showing you the pictures of the new model!

In the everlasting patent saga between Apple and Samsung, Samsung has filed a patent complaint against Apple. The complaint has been filed in France after a continuing battle between the two companies over mobile phone and tablet technologies.

Apple is accused of infringing three Samsung patents on mobile technology in both the iPad and iPhone. A December hearing is expected to decided the outcome, which may lead to Apple taking the iPhone and iPad off the shelves in time for Christmas.

This is just one piece of the ongoing saga between Apple and Samsung, with both companies making similar products in the phone and tablet market. The three infringements are said to be related to the technology within Apple products and not the design of the products. “The complaint is focused on three technology patents and not the design of the tablet” said a Samsung spokesperson.

The filing is likely to be a retaliation to the complaint made by Apple in Germany which led to the removal and banning of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 last month. The ruling was appealed by Samsung but the decision was upheld in Apple’s favour only a few days ago. The ruling was based on the extreme similarities in looks between the iPad and Tab 10.1. The Germans love their technology and gadgets so the ruling was a massive setback for Samsung.

These are just a few of the cases, which are being filed worldwide in the USA, Asia, Australia and elsewhere. The dispute is always between Apple’s iPad and iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy range ( a tablet and smartphone).

This is definitely not the last we will hear of patent complaints and expect more companies to be involved in the future.

Kantar Worldpanel ComTech have done some new research into the UK tablet market which shows that there are an incredible 3.62 million people with tablets in the UK. Unsurprisingly it is the iPad that dominates the current market with a 73% market share. The Samsung Galaxy Tab comes second with a mere 6% market share, showing just how far in front the iPad actually is within the tablet market.

The iPads dominance is due to many factors, being the first tablet to the mass market certainly helped the Apple product. Another factor is definitely the high budget advertising campaign by Apple, the massive TV ad campaign at Christmas and Summer showcased the iPad to practically everyone.

Kantar also found that 28% of those wanting to buy a tablet are not sure which tablet to buy. This shows that there are gaps in the market where brands can grow and really compete with the iPad. HP recently announced their withdrawal from the hardware market which caused the TouchPad to be sold at a knock down price of £89. The TouchPad’s flew of the shelves, proving that there is a market for reasonably priced tablets.

Daniel Thomas, Financial Times correspondent states that,

Almost three-quarters of tablet sales in the UK have been taken by Apple’s market-leading iPad, according to Kantar Worldpanel ComTec, the data provider.

With the tablet market set to continue with rapid growth only 50% of potential buyers said they will be buying an iPad. Does this mean their dominance will be less so in the future? Probably not, 28% of those wanting to buy a tablet were not sure what brand to buy and with the iPad being the most popular they may go for the Apple game changer.

The research also reported that only 3% didn’t know what a tablet was, showing that the advertising campaigns of Apple, Sony and Samsung have been extremely successful.

Ericom announced the release of their faster RDP mobile client, called Ericom AccessToGo™. According to their press release , this client

provides secure, on-demand access to Windows applications and desktops running on terminal servers, virtual desktops and workstations’. It adds that ‘Ericom’s mobile client accelerates complex graphic displays on iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and Android tablets and phones, up to speeds ten times faster than other mobile RDP clients

The client is powered by the Ericom Blaze™ RDP compression and acceleration technology and provides an SSL gateway, Ericom Secure Gateway, that is fast and flexible and offers seamless installation and configuration.

AccessToGo provides performance at different levels and helps faster and seamless interaction of the device, with maps, photos, radiology images, Acrobat files (.pdf), and so on. The client hopes to reduce the IT overhead and support users that use many mobile device types (BYOD).

The unique feature of this client is that the UI for its Apple and android version is the same, and will be extendable to other new and emerging platforms. It is believed that when the client works in the Ericom Blaze mode, the client is almost 10x faster than other such similar clients.

The client can be downloaded and used from the Apple iStore or iTunes for Apple users, and from the Android Markets for Android devices.

After the beta launch of iOS 4.3, Apple has released jailbreak for iOS 4.3. Now you can use PwnageTool bundle to jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 on fourth generation iPod touch. This bundle can be used to custom create jailbroken 4.3 firmware file on your 4G iPod touch. But remember this is a tethered jailbreak so you will have to restart the device in a tethered-jailbroken mode using tetheredboot utility.

Note – PwnageTool is available only for Mac users for now and is coming soon for Window users.

Here is the guide to Jailbreak iPod Touch 4G on iOS 4.2.1 using PwnageTool for Mac.

Things you will need:

PwnageTool 4.2

4.2.1 iPod Touch Firmware

4.2.1 (4G): iPod4,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw

Step 1

Create a folder called “Pwnage” on desktop and IPSW file works best when downloaded using Firefox and Safari.

Step 2

Double Click and drag the PwnageTool icon to the Pwnage Folder, to launch PwnageTool application. Click OK if you get warning from DevTeam.

Step 3

Select “Expert Mode” from the available top menu bar.

Step 4

Upon selecting your iPod, you will locate a check-mark on phone image. Then proceed with the blue given arrow to continue.

Step 5

You will then find “Browse for IPSW” page. Click on it and select your firmware from Pwnage folder to Open from the popup window.

Step 6

From the options available click “General” that will allow you to decide the partition size. Then click next with the blue arrow.

Step 7

As an iPod Nano user, if you were feeling a little neglected with all the updates to the other devices, Apple has some good news for you. Apple has released software update version 1.1 for its 6th generation iPod Nano. The latest version 1.1 of the software brings two new features to 6th generation of the iPod Nano.

The following are the two interesting features that you can use as a 6th generation iPod Nano:

Ability to shut down the iPod Nano: The latest feature is to help you turn the iPod Nano off directly, when the iPod is not connected or charging, using the Sleep/Wake button. This is different from how the user would have to hold down the Sleep/Wake button down to force it to go to sleep. When the user turns off the iPod nano music and slide shows are stopped, the radio is cleared, and the voice memo being recorded and workout data is saved and stopped.

More Control playback: The Sleep/Wake button can now be used to change the track or the radio station. Alternatively, it can be used to pause or play the existing track or radio station.

However, to allows your iPod nano to use the Sleep/Wake button the following steps must be completed:

1. Move to the Home screen, select Settings.

2. Under Settings, select Music, and then select Sleep/Wake.

3. Select the On/Off option.

4. Depending on what you want to use the button for, select one of the following:

Next Track: To use the button to change tracks or radio station.

Play/Pause: To use the button to play or pause tracks or radio stations.

Apple counted down to this milestone by setting up an online counter a few days ago.

Apple and Android have been in a race with each other to be the most preferred option for applications. This began when Google introduced the Android. Since then, experts followers and enthusiasts have had extended debates on which of these two options are better. Both have been trying to race to the top in popularity.

Apple will use this as an indicator on how famous and popular and loved Apple apps are for their customers. Additionally, this will add more pressure on Android that is competing in its own way to race to the top and capture their customers’ imagination.

The Apple App Store downloads was 1 million less than 2 years ago. In just 2 years the App Store managed to serve up 9 billion downloads.

the official iphonedownloadblog says

this in itself is a testament of the accessibility, quality, and pricing of the apps that have been served up by Apple.

Thanksgiving and Black Friday has enticed Apple to do what they have probably never done in recent times. Apple has cut down the price on its iPad line.

The company is cutting off $41 for its tablet computers; this is part of their Black Friday promotion. It is giving discounts of almost eight percent discount on the model of base-level and five percent discount on the top-end model of iPad.

This means that the 16GB model a model without 3G connection and 16 gigabytes of storage space is now available at $458.

The most expensive, and top-end 64GB storage version with Wi-Fi and 3G connection, is now only $788.

That one-day price sale could still sound costly to several shoppers, but the sale of Black Friday is receiving report from technology blogs because Apple does not provide discounts on especially their high-end gadgets.

Discounts have been listed and offered for a range of other products of the Apple website. Additionally, the website also offers free shipping for shoppers that order for products worth $50 or more.
