No Carrier-locked for iPad 2 in Canada
Apple Canada seems to have suggested that the iPad 2 can be purchased with career-locked. The website reads – The iPad model you purchase is specially configured to work with either Bell, Rogers, or Telus. So while you don’t have to activate 3G service right away, you should choose your iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G according to the carrier you prefer
iPad 1 was never locked to any specific carrier, with how this above paragraph was read, most provides and users understood that the iPad 2 will be locked with particular carriers. However, the ipadincanada has confirmed from Rodgers, one of the mobile providers listed on the Apple site, that the iPad 2 will also remain unlocked.
It has been confirmed that only the Verizon iPad 2 3G model cannot be unlocked because it has built-in CDMA chipset that will not work with GSM. The AT&T model that has a microSIM slot is unlocked and can be moved to other carriers easily. Buying the UMTS or GSM will ensure that the customer can use the iPad 2 anywhere in the world without requiring jailbreak, because they are not SIM-locked like the iPhone.
Though this has created some confusion in the minds of particularly Canadian customers and provides, it has been clarified by both Apple and Canadian carriers.
