How to save money on calls using Wi-Fi
Mobile phone bills can get expensive quickly if you use your phone regularly. Now in the 21st century you can send texts and make calls using your already paid for internet connection at no extra cost, helping you save hundreds through mobile phone bills.
Voice of Internet Protocol (VoIP) allows you to add a second phone line to your life. Whether you need it for business or just want to save on personal bills you can create a second phone number to be used over Wi-Fi and the internet.
You can now even turn a iPod Touch into a phone using VoIP apps. You could keep your monthly mobile phone allowance by using VoIP via 3G or Wi-Fi on your smartphone.
At first this technology was awful to use, calls were choppy and there were delays between each person talking. However this initial technology has been developed and is slowly being perfected. Using some apps it is even comparable to phoning a regualr landline phone.
There are hundreds of VoIP apps available on all the app stores, however below are just a few of the most popular available.
Skype, which many use for video chat, does also have the ability to call phone numbers – landlines and mobiles. You are also able to conference call for those business people amongst you.Skype offers a good quality service and is available for computers (Windows, Mac OSX and Linux) and smartphones alike. You can also call anyone with a Skype account, be it on an iPhone, BlackBerry or computer, for free.
From $8 a month you can get a Skype number with unlimited calling and texting. Voicemail is an additional $2.10 per month.
Another popular option is Google Voice. Google Voice gives you one phone number which can also be forwarded to multiple other numbers. Google Voice is free to use via computers but currently doesn’t offer the VoIP service on mobile phones. You can text other phones using Google Voice from your smartphone however, saving you money on texts. Through a computer you can ring any number in the US and Canada for free but international calls cost $0.02 a minute.
VoIP apps are being perfected and new apps are coming out everyday. We will review some more in the future so check back again in the future!
