3rd party launchers are a common thing on Android, a prime example of how customizable the OS is. If you’re bored with the stock HTC launcher or want to try something new, definitely check out Go Launcher EX. Its free on the market and one of the best launchers you can find.

Start off the app and you’ll get to the Go Launcher EX screen. It doesn’t give away much at the start but once you start checking out you’ll notice how great the launcher is. The default apps at the bottom, animation effects when swipingg across home screens and the general look of the launcher has an air of quality about it.

One of the things you’ll notice is that Go Launcher EX has a built in task manager. Open the app drawer and you’ll be presented with three tabs for all of your applications, recently used applications and currently running ones. From here you can free up memory with the click of a button. Additionally you can specify certain “locked” applications in the settings that do not close through the task killer which is a great feature to have.
You can use pinch to zoom out and get a look at all the home screens just like in the stock HTC Sense Launcher, you can add home screens here, move and re-order them and select which one is the default home screen. The launcher has got everything covered here.

Once you head into the settings menu is where you can really customize the launcher. Go Launcher EX has some wonderful themes and widgets made specifically for this launcher and they are all high quality widgets that look great with the whole launcher. I went ahead and installed the TouchWiz 4.0 theme on my HTC Desire, hit the menu key, selected themes and got it running and it looks amazing. There are other themes you can try out aswell such as the Sketch theme or the beautiful Classic theme.
Go Launcher EX also comes with some of the best looking widgets I have seen with a launcher. They may not be a lot more functional then other widgets on the market, but they definitely look amazing. The calendar widget below looks slick, and it integrates with your default android calendar so it still syncs with Gmail and you have great animations for changing months and the blue on white look has a calming feel to it. Then we have the Facebook widget, you can have a small 1×4 widget for updating statuses’ or a full 4×4 widget.

Overall I absolutely love Go Launcher EX. Its not the most future rich launcher on the app market, but it has all the basics covered. It looks beautiful, animations are smooth, its fast and you can endlessly customize it with all the wonderful themes and widgets available for the launcher to give it a new facelift everytime you get bored. That’s one of the best things about Android as a whole, you can do what you want with it and alter every aspect of your smartphone and Go Launcher EX should be on your list if you’re going down that road.
