Enable location based profile switching with Llama for Android
Llama is a new app on the Android market, similar to Locale in the sense you can set it to switch profiles based on location. It can be an inconvenience having to turn off your cell phone’s volume or change other settings everytime you go to work or school so why not let Llama do it for you instead?
Once you download the app and launch it, you’ll be greeted by the rather dull Llama interface. We have four tabs here Areas, Events, Profiles and Recent. We’ll start with the first tab. This is where you can define different locations you go to frequently such as Home or work (which are added by default). To configure the location you’ll need to be at it first and then right click the desired area and ask Llama to memorize it. Once that is done, you can enter the second menu and define actions on the basis of location and/or time. For e.g you could set Llama to turn on the Loud profile when you leave home and turn on the silent one when you reach work. Once you leave work It could go to loud again and lower the volume down when you are back home and maybe even switch the Wifi network on?
Then we have the Profile menu, this is where you configure different profiles for your cell phone, you have the usual options for Ringer/Media/Alarm volumes, Vibrate on off and two rather useful options in here. The first is titled “Noisy Contacts”. These are the contacts for which Llama will override the profile settings. You can prioritize people in this way and get calls that you do not want to miss and at the same time shut everyone else up. The second future here is rather less useful but nice nonetheless. When Llama run in the background, you get a small Llama icon on the taskbar, you can configure this to be a different color based on profile so you always know which profile your cell is in. The last tab here is the recent tab, that simply shows you what tasks have been executed through Llama.
There are a lot of great features in the app once you start digging around and for a free app, it does have a lot to offer. Take the time to configure it properly, and Llama will make your life much easier.
