Mango update attempts to be a savior for the Windows Phone OS by bringing more than 500 new features. The chief amongst these is the ability to multi-task, Twitter and Facebook integration and the availability of new APIs for developers to create more capable applications. The update roll out would normally take 2-3 months before everyone has gotten it, however with the method described below you can get it early. It will work on any phone whether it’s factory unlocked or carrier branded.

The prerequisite for the Mango update is that you need the NoDo + security update before you can get Mango. This means you need the 7392 update before you can proceed to get Mango update.

1. Make sure your phone is fully charged. Connect your phone to your PC and start Zune.
2. Click phone>settings>updates and see if any update is found. If Zune says phone is up to date then move onto the next step. Or if update is found then continue with the update process.
3. Time for a force update. Timing is crucial here so be careful. Click update button again, and when you do immediately disconnect your PC from the Internet by taking out the Ethernet cable or disabling Wi-Fi. You need to do these 1-2 seconds after you click the update button in Zune. If it says your phone is updated then your timing was off. Keep trying and eventually Zune will tell you an update is available.
4. If update found, enable Internet and proceed to update. If it’s the pre-Mango update let it install and then do the same disconnect procedure for Mango.
5. The update procedure is 7008>7390>7392>7403>7720. The last one being the Mango update
6. After the 7403 update Mango should install on its own.

The whole update procedure can take more than 1 hour so make sure you have enough time before you start updating. During update do not disconnect or attempt to use your phone or close Zune. After all updates are completed your phone will restart. You can check the software version by going into settings>about phone. If it says 7720 then you’re running latest version of Mango.

Working from a cafe´might sound to be interesting, but only when you have a seamless connectivity. Yes, I have a fetish for cafe´s with free WiFi.

However, that’s not always possible. In the past several years, I have tried using Reliance NetConnect+ and Tata Photon+ on my windows machine. Both worked pretty decent – depending on areas where I used them. For those who keep asking me which is a better connection, none of them is an excellent service to trust, when it comes to mobility. To each, his own.

That was on Microsoft Windows. However, more than an year ago I switched to mac and realized that these services aren’t great when it comes to support drivers for the devices on mac. I did manage to get drivers from somewhere on the internet, but always had issues with speeds and connectivity.

Recently, I upgraded my Macbook to Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 and realized that the ZTE modem for Reliance Broadband+ doesn’t work on it, anymore. I spent an entire night looking for a work-around along with a dear friend in Bombay. I failed!

Today, I went on and discovered the problem and hence the solution for everyone who has the latest version of Mac OS and a ZTE modem. Note that this driver update would possibly work with any service provider – Reliance & Tata, for example.

The problem was the lack of compatibility with the existing drivers to support a 64 bit machine upgraded to Mac Lion OS X on a ZTE modem. Either it would fail to detect or force eject it the moment one would fire the dialer app.

The Reliance support page has a link to download the ZTE driver, but it doesn’t work. The ZTE website is a difficult terrain to play in. However, I did manage to get a direct link to half a dozen driver files. After several rounds of installing and trying out the options, I could get one solution that works flawlessly. Sharing it with everyone else.

How do I install and use the ZTE modem?

1. Uninstall all previous ZTE drivers on your mac.
2. Make sure you’re device is unplugged from the machine.
3. Download the updated driver (comes with a dialer) and install it afresh.
4. Plug in your usb modem and fire the dialer app which shall now be on your desktop.
5. Go to settings and enter your username and password (leave black for tata photon+ and enter the phone number for reliance as username & password)
6. Connect and go!

4. Facebook shall ask you to enter an action and an object for your app. Don’t get confused as we are always there to fight the bad people and help you. Enter random things in the options, just like you did earlier in the App name and App Namespace areas. We entered People can review gadget through our app that is pretty much random to us and can’t happen. Once you have entered all the details click on get started.
5. Once again you will be welcomed by another page with all Martian to many of you but like we said before no need to get frightened as we are always there. You don’t need to do anything, just scroll to the bottom and click on the big blue block saying ‘Save changes and Next’. You will be required to do so a couple of time more.
6. You will be taken back to the original Open Graph page, don’t worry its perfectly normal. Sit back and sip a cup of coffee for the next few minutes and then go back to the homepage of facebook (www.facebook.com). There you’ll see a large banner on  the top inviting you to use the all new Facebook Timeline (check the picture for reference).

In brief, Facebook is an effective social networking site. 1. Open a Facebook account: This is the first step to using Facebook. On the homepage, enter your full name, email ID and password. Ensure your password has both numbers and letters. Once you signup, you will receive a verification mail in the inbox of your email ID used to sign up on Facebook. Click on the verification link to get connected to Facebook.

2. Your profile information: Click on ‘edit profile’ tab to add / update data about yourself. You can reveal / show only your birth date and month info and not the year, a click on a check box will help you with this. Enter the basic details like your country, hometown, languages you know, education, work place, etc and ensure you click on ‘save’ after you add data in each section.

3. Upload pictures: One of the first pictures you may want to upload is your profile picture. Click on ‘Upload profile picture’ and browse to select your picture from your desktop / folder and click ‘OK’ to see the picture being displayed. You can add more photos by selecting the ‘photo’ icon on the applications toolbar, click on ‘create a photo album’ and add an album name and set privacy settings before you browse and add more photos to the album. You can choose groups of friends whom you want to share or hide the photos from in the privacy settings.

4. Search for friends to add: To search for a college-mate or co-worker, click on ‘friend finder’ tab and enter the name of your friend to search them. Alternatively, you can click on ‘Find friends’ tab on the right hand pane, using this page, you can find friends from your company, college or school that will be listed. Photos and names of people you may know will appear below and you can directly go to their Facebook page and add them as your friend by sending them the request. Once they accept and confirm the two of you will be connected as friends on Facebook.

5. Messages (private and public): At the top right hand corner is a tab that says ‘send message’, click on that and type a subject and your message to your friend which only he / she can view and respond. This is similar to e-mail message which is personal. However, to send a message that everyone can see, you can ‘post’ a message on the ‘wall’ of your friend.

6. Chat on Facebook: At the right hand bottom corner is a window called ‘chat’. Click on that to expand the window and the friends who are online at that point and available for chat display a green icon next to their names. You can click on your friend’s name and a chat window opens just like any other chat feature.

7. Upload links and videos: On your Facebook homepage, you can click on the ‘links’ and ‘videos’ toolbar to share your favourite or liked links and videos with others. Alternatively, if you are watching a video that you like on YouTube or any other website and would like to share it with your Facebook friends look for a Facebook icon in the toolbar below the video and click on that to share the video.

8. Notes: Look for the ‘Notes’ tab at the left hand pane on your home page, click on that to find notes written by your friends. It could be useful information, random notes or tips shared. To post your own notes, click the ‘My notes’ tab and then click on ‘+Write a Note’ to write your own note. The privacy settings here will help you choose whom you would like to share the notes with; the ‘Save draft’ option will allow you save your note as a draft until you decide to ‘publish’ it by clicking on the ‘Publish’ tab.

9. Create a group: On the left hand pane of your home page, you will find a tab called ‘Create groups’. Click the tab, add a group name and members whom you would like to add to the group. Below you will also find a privacy tab and you can choose from ‘open’, ‘closed’ or ‘secret’. By choosing ‘open’, you confirm that the group can be visible to others along with the posts from the group. Also anybody can choose to join the group. ‘Closed’ option will restrict the conversations only to the members of the group. Here the members can be seen by others. By choosing ‘secret’ tab, the members and the content exchanged are secretive.

10. Profile privacy: Click ‘account’ and select ‘privacy settings’ to set your privacy settings. Click on ‘Customize settings ‘ to adjust your privacy options such that your posts, pictures, etc can be viewed only by ‘Everyone’, ‘Friends of Friends’, ‘Friends only’ and ‘Customize’. The Customize option allows you to hide the posts or picture albums from any group or people of your choice. Do not forget to ‘save settings’ once you have set your settings.
