Samsung, the Japanese smartphone manufacturer, have released their latest smartphone the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The Samsung Nexus is a highly anticipated phone because it is the first smartphone to run the new Android operating system, Android Ice Cream Sandwich (v4.0).

The phone has a large 4.65inch display, putting it ahead of many smartphones. The screen has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, providing a really crisp and clear image. The smartphone also features the Samsung Super AMOLED technology, not quite the Plus technology seen on the Samsung Galaxy S 2 however. The screen is almost on the same level as the iPhone 4S but on a slightly large scale. With dimensions of 135.5 x 67.9 x 8.9mm the phone fits in the hand nicely. Weighing a decent 135g it also sits in pockets easily and is not bulky at all. The phone is quite thin at 8.9mm but still has a sturdy feel to it. It is very slightly thicker, 0.3mm, than the Galaxy S 2 though.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus has a dual core 1.2GHz Coretex A9 processor with 1GB of RAM. The hardware inside the phone puts it on par with the ebst smartphones on the market and it just pips the iPhone when it comes to the speed of taking photos.

This leads me onto the camera which is 5 megapixels. This may be considered low in this day and age, especially compared to the many 8 megapixel smartphones available. However the picture quality is awesome and really impressive considering it is ‘only’ 5 megapixels. The Nexus can also record in full HD, 1080p, putting it on par with the new iPhone 4S. The front facing camera is also decent at 1.3 megapixels, perfect for video calls.

Another area where the dual core processor comes into play is general use of the phone. Switching between apps and multi-tasking is done with ease, better than most Android phones on the market.

Using the internet on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus was similarly fast. With the great screen quality images appear crystal clear as does the text at full zoom. One thing Android has which Apple don’t is Flash. Flash videos can be played on the Galaxy Nexus and look brilliant on screen.

Being the first phone to run Android Ice Cream Sandwich you can forgive any bugs. However we found that the Nexus and new Android OS complimented each other perfectly. The interaction is much slicker and the OS in general much more simpler to use. It also sees NFC technology being used with Android Beam. After the roaring success of iPhone 2.0 last year, Apple is back in action to widen its presence in the smartphone market.

In a hotly-awaited event last night, Apple Inc unveiled the new operating system software, called iPhone OS 3.0. Other than adding new features, Apple has also made up for some of the big misses in the existing model.

Hit 1: Upgrade’s free

iPhone users get the new software for free, while iPod Touch users will have to pay $9.95. The operating system runs on the latest version of the iPhone, released last year, as well as the original model.
